Our Vision

 

The vision of AFiUK is to equip the African Family in the UK to

take its rightful place as fruitful members of the society, and to

make the most of the available opportunities in their adopted

country without adversely affecting the strong family and

community networks that Africans are known for.

 

Aims

 

To be the one stop place for families of African origin

resident in the UK to seeking Advice, information, on matters

relating to Parenting, children’s education and any family

friendly activities that enrich family lives.

To offer consultation and expert knowledge to professionals

and practitioners from the Local Authority and other family

support agencies.

 

How

​

  • Helping to set up and run children’s clubs of various

  • interests as indicated by parents and their children

 

  • Helping to set up self-help parenting groups

 

  • Offering Parenting training on pertinent subjects such as Cross-cultural parenting, and effective parenting at the different ages and stages of the family

 

  • Training volunteers for befriending

 

  • We can be contracted to set up a team to run parallel children's programmes at community events such as church functions, school cultural days, commuinity celebrations & National days, conferences.

 

  • Linking with other agencies such as Health, Social Services and Education to provide tailored training and information seminars to families.

 

  • Facilitating open dialogue workshops between practitioners and users of public services.

 

  • Running cultural awareness workshops for practioners of public services.

Meet the Team

 

JACQUI GITAU - Company Director

Jacqui is a trainer and is passionate about supporting parents to create warm and safe families where children's emotional and social development is nurtured and forstered.  She holds a first degree in Community Family Development and a Masters degree in Childhood Studies.  She has also trained in Pre-school practice and Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector, and Parent Education.

She has worked over 10 years in Oxford supporting families in order to maximise children's emotional and psychological wellbeing and improve academic learning; through outreach work in the families' homes as well as educational settings.  She strongly believes in multi-agency working, collaborating with other practitioners in Health, Social care and Education sector to reach the best outcomes for the children.  She works in a Children's Centre in Oxford and also volunteers to run a Girls' club and coordinate self-help parenting sessions among the Kenyan community in Oxford.  She coordinates the activities of AFiUK CIC and is keen to partner with any agencies or companies with a similar vision.

RACHEL WAINAINA WALTON - Company Director

Rachel is a trainer with a strong background in community development. She has been instrumental in forming direct links with BME groups and individuals. Her work through training, development and capacity building, aims to bridge the gap between under-represented BME groups and access to public services. She has been actively involved in a number of local initiatives including coordination of Pathway to Employment for BME groups, as well as numerous projects with TACMEP and other organizations helping to address inequalities.

 

She holds a degree in Community Development and Psychology, a Post Graduate Diploma in Society, Gender & Culture; Level 4 in Information Advice & Guidance (IAG) and an Award in Preparing to Teach in Lifelong Learning Support (PPTLS). Rachel has worked extensively with BME groups on safeguarding, health and social care, as well as having an involvement in a number of initiatives helping to break down barriers and address inequalities.

With many years experience working with Children and Teen Ministries in East Africa and UK, Rachel is passionate about collaborating with other statutory and voluntary bodies at community and grassroot levels with a similar vision.

Rachel is based in Colchester and coordinates the work of AFiUK in Colchester and the general South East region.

JANET LAW - Company Secretary

Janet Law was born in Johannesburg South Africa. She qualified as a Nursery Teacher from the Witwatersrand Teachers Training College in 1978, working as a class teacher with children between the ages of 3-6years old. In 1993 she moved to the United Kingdom   Since then she has developed and managed a variety of early years education establishments including a Local Authority Family Centre, Community day nurseries and a Sure Start Children’s Centre. These have been located in cities rich in ethnic diversity, and sited in areas of social and economic disadvantage.

 

The focus of her work has been the support of children and their families, including working with the BME and immigrant communities, and developing creative projects to encourage and facilitate understanding and awareness between communities, thereby promoting integration. She is a passionate believer that the exchange of culture and family experiences engenders inclusion which ultimately will lead to a greater awareness and acceptance of our differences, but also establish our common values and beliefs. 

KOLE OBASA - Trustee

Kole Obasa has recently been appointed to the board of AFiUK to fulfil it’s Mission and Vision and to oversee the conduct of the business by observing the highest standards both of corporate governance and of ethical responsibility.

Kole is an avid blogger. His blog ThisKoleobasa.com is influential within the African community. Presently, he is involved in the development and growth of VidMii - a Video Marketing company, which is an arm of ThisKoleObasa Media. His current goal is to use VidMii as a means to provide Video Marketing solutions for Small to Medium Business owners and UK Entrepreneurs generally. He has also directly managed large and wide varieties of marketing campaigns in the private sector. Kole is passionate about community integration and is involved in the local community

Kole has a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Business Management with Marketing from the University of Suffolk and a Masters of Arts in Creative Writing from the University of Essex. His educational training and area of expertise includes but is not limited to: Business Law, Innovation and Creativity, Marketing Communications and International Marketing Strategies, Copywriting, Creative Writing and Editing.
